FAQ

What inspired you to try to live a greener life?

It started when I began cloth diapering my daughter.   I became aware of just how much nasty trash I had been sending away with the trash truck….and never giving it a second thought.  It was then that I realized that MY garbage–MY cereal boxes, MY juice bottles, MY disposable diapers–were not going to just disappear the minute the trash truck drove out of sight.  It finally became real to me that our poor Earth is being treated as one giant trash can.  Our Earth is being poisoned by our self-centered, convenience-obsessed society.  And that realization made me ill.   I felt like I was waking up from oblivion.  I felt like it was time to make the effort to minimize the amount of ick I leave behind in the world.  So, I am far from an expert on the green way of life, but I’m making efforts to become a better citizen of our planet.

Are you raising your kids to be green?

I’m doing my best! My son has found a passion in taking care of our Earth. He tears up a bit when he talks about landfills. He absolutely cannot stand seeing litter on the ground. Before he throws anything away, he brings it to me to ask if it’s something that can be recycled. I taught him about gardening without chemicals this spring and summer. I think that his love for our planet and for nature is rooted deeply now and that it will stick with him for life. As for my daughter, she’s young still, but I will make every effort to help her be aware of little differences she can make as she gets older. By wearing cloth diapers, she’s off to a great start and she doesn’t even know it yet.

Just how green are you?

Mmmm…I’d say ‘only somewhat green’ at this point. I’m working on it and hope to be ‘super green’ at some point in my life. And those are technical terms for levels of greenness, by the way. As for the name of the site, I figured ‘the only somewhat green wife’ might be harder to remember, so I just went for ‘the green wife’. Hope that’s okay with you ‘super green’ ones out there.
