They’re out there. The school supplies. The sales. The back-to-school frenzy that excites and/or overwhelms every parent.
For me, it’s 99% excitement.
I have mad, mad love for school supplies of all kinds. When stores start stocking their back-to-school section, I become flat-out giddy. It started with kindergarten 30-something years ago and that love has only grown. Each year, I waited with great anticipation for the day my mom would take me on that special school-shopping trip. It was like a second Christmas to me.
The smell of a new box of Crayolas!
The sound of the pencil sharpener as it works brand new pencils to their perfect points.
School glue. Admit it…you’ve tasted it.
Stop shaking your head.
Notebooks full of crisp, blank sheets of paper.
Trapper Keepers. Oh, how I long for my old Trapper Keepers! Purple + unicorns = a happy middle-school me.
Yeah. The smell and feel of all those new goodies promising a wonderful new year ahead just thrill me! I grew up in public school and was the kind of kid who geeked out on that stuff, aced quizzes, and couldn’t wait for a test. Learning -and proving myself- was very important to me. Nerd alert! Nerd alert!
Let’s just say that maybe O.G. nerds make great homeschool parents. Can we go with that?
I’m an Amazon wish list addict. I could wish-list my life away. “Wish-list” is a verb, right?
So, obviously, this time of year means I’m merging my love of wish-listing with my love for school supplies. I thought I’d share some of my dream goodies with you. They vary from traditional (mmm, that Crayola smell again) to more unique things that would work beautifully in our homeschool. Maybe they’ll inspire ideas for your kids whether you homeschool or not!
For starters, this chemistry set. Drool-worthy, right?
And this triple beam scale. So many uses!
Ball chairs to help with posture, core strength, and a mean case of the fidgets.
Hand exercisers to help with handwriting. Excellent for weak grip issues and/or dysgraphia.
Construction sets are irresistable.
Straws & connectors I remember playing with something like this in GT as a kid and I just couldn’t get enough.
Physics sets I love physics and love teaching the kids through hands-on projects like these.
I’m going to need several of these File boxes for planning and storage.
And if I have those, I’m going to need a lot of these!
Maybe one of these for each kid to keep their subjects separate and organized?
A dry-erase board and easel would be super-duper so we wouldn’t always have to gather around my little 12″ lap board.
Fountain pens! They make writing a lot more fun for kids who are reluctant to put pen to paper.
And crayons, of course, because (say it with me!) I love that Crayola smell!
And, of course, the big stuff. Like, you know, the curriculum we love so much. While I love piecing together units myself, Moving Beyond the Page is incredible at keeping us focused and goal-oriented throughout the year. Elliott will be doing the Ages 7-9 level and Alex will do the Ages 11-13 one. Looking through everything that’s included for the full year makes me so happy. MBTP is a wonderful company and they put so much care into putting together the units that you can just feel their love for learning.
So, yeah. That’s a few of the things on my list. I have a feeling there will be more posts to come as we get this school year underway. In the meantime, I’m going to go buy a winning lottery ticket. You have a great day!
